We’ve also been busy at our national disciplinary conferences, with Kris presenting at the Society for Music Theory, Nigel presenting at the National Communication Association, and Jesse speaking at the American Studies Association.
Lee launched a new project, Student Digital Project Beta-Testers. She has been working with a small group of students, training them on concepts of metacognition, peer-review and feedback, and digital project scaffolding. The goal is to have these students be available to beta-test digital projects and assignments and give faculty feedback before assigning them in their classes. Lee also helped in the development the new #UMWmade social media campaign. Share the great work you’ve been doing using the hashtag on social media!
Class visits and faculty consultations have been on the upswing, between final projects having begun to ramp up and faculty starting to think about courses next semester. As well, Kris has been working on data.umwdomains.com, adding more visualizations to the dashboard. He was also quoted in a number of media articles, on topics such as Net Neutrality and its impact on higher education and how Bots are changing politics. Nigel has an co-authored article under review, “Antenarratology and anonymous whistleblowing: The narrative network of
MormonLeaks.io.”
Jess has created and made available through Installatron two new wordpress templates for faculty and students, allowing them to get up and running with just one click on Domain of One’s Own. She and the student aides, Stef and Bethany, have also been working hard on creating a DTLT ‘zine, in order to provide a fun analogue way to share the great work faculty are doing with technology and Domain of One’s Own.
Jesse was in the media talking about going gradeless, weighing in on the recent revival of the laptop ban debate, and automated grading. We continue to be an important resource to the larger higher education community on some of the most important topics currently impacting our work as educators.
Save the date! The 2018 Digital Pedagogy Lab will be taking place on July 30-August 3, 2018, right here once again at UMW in the Convergence Center. This year, there is a new format, with day-long crash courses taking place on Monday, and then longer, four-day tracks from Tuesday to Friday. Sean Michael Morris joins the DTLT team as Lead Instructional Designer and Director of Digital Pedagogy Lab. Sean is a digital teacher and pedagogue, with experience especially in instructional design, networked learning, digital composition and publishing, collaboration, and editing. He has worked in digital teaching and learning for over 16 years, most especially in the fields of Critical Digital Pedagogy and Critical Instructional Design. As an instructional designer, Sean is committed to engaging colleagues in critical inspection of digital technologies, and to turning a social justice lens upon education.
As Director of Digital Pedagogy Lab, Sean has consulted with institutions and corporations including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Marylhurst University, the Community College of Denver, Udacity, Instructure, the City University of New York, HASTAC, the University of Delaware, the University of Dayton, the American University in Cairo, Iliff School of Theology, University of Warwick, and Open University, among others.
